Review: Calonge Hand Woven Leather Wallet

Calonge Signature Weave Octo

Though I’ve been to Phoenix Market City in Bangalore umpteen times, it was only during this weekend’s trip that I happened to notice the Calonge store tucked in a corner. Two characteristics were very evident even as I looked from far – the soothing pastels and the weave. The latter was very familiar – yes, it was very like the iconic Intrecciato. Within minutes of entering the store I learnt that Calonge is an Indian brand and the founder is from Chennai. I was glad to meet our very own Bottega Veneta!

The weaving is truly immaculate and world class. Their signature weave, called Octo, reminds me of plastic woven baskets grandmothers used to carry in South India.

Now the bag, wallet actually, I got, was at a discount of 50%. My dear granny gifted it to me. It has the criss-cross leather band weaving and a beautiful mix of dull metallic hues. When you open the central zip, the wallet literally fans out revealing 7 distinct sections, including a zippered pocket and 12 compartments for cards. Isn’t that awesome space? In addition, there is a small zippered pouch on the exterior. In tandem with the smaller size of this exterior pouch, the weaving is also done using thinner leather bands and the effect it creates is stellar. All the three zips on the wallet are sturdy, broad ones that function smoothly. Its retail price is INR 3,300 but I got it at half the price. It’s a tad bit expensive, but you need to appreciate the intricate hand weaving.

Calonge is an upcoming bag brand in India and with the quality standards they are maintaining, I’m sure they’d go a long way!
