The anticipation of looking forward to something pleasant keeps the human race ticking, doesn’t it? And when that ‘something’ is handbags from the world’s most sought after fashion houses, the excitement is palpable. We’ve embraced the Fall bags, seen the SS ’14 shows, made the most of sales during the year end festive period. The Spring Summer ’14 collections are going to hit the stores in a month or two from now. Doesn’t hurt to be well aware of what’s in the offing and be prepared in terms of budget and demand! While variations to the existing and iconic pieces are to be expected and very much present, let’s look at the new handbag styles brands have innovated for us.
Fendi 3Jours

Though the name suggests this is a variation of the 2Jours, shape wise they are quite the opposite. While the 2Jours had an inwards inclination at the top sides, its latest cousin has an outward propensity. After all bat-wings was a trend last season.
Mulberry Kensal

The Kensal is a feminine, svelte sling bag with an envelope flap and with structure. The strap is adjustable so it can be converted to a shoulder bag. They have made references to their roots by naming the bag after an area in London and the briefcase lock on the bag.
Alexander McQueen Tassel Skull Clutch

This was not only a new entrant for SS 14 but also that’s the only clutch introduced since the iconic skull clutch. It has exaggerated tassels and a short chain handle. Tassels and drawstrings were seen on quite a few SS 14 bags.
Balenciaga Large Framed Clutch

I personally do not prefer metal-like rigidity in bags, as it makes accessing contents difficult. This one has a metal frame at the opening of the bag. Yet the overall shape looks appealing. How much they actually hinder comfortable access remains to be seen.
Bottega Veneta Brera Bag Dusty Grey

I like the texture of this bag, the soft undulations in color and the two short handles. It seems to be a good everyday bag. Silhouette-wise, nothing extra-ordinary.
Diorific by Christian Dior

This is my favourite of the lot. The large pleat lends it a unique character. And the spring colors on this particular variant are so remindful of the season they are made for.
Burberry Petal Bag

This was the only bag used by Burberry in their Runway show but thanks to the 30 odd variations, they didn’t all look exactly the same!
Proenza Schouler Curved Bar Clutch

Austerity is the word that comes to mind. These lack the Spring spirit altogether in my opinion and the strange outlines don’t help much to alter it.
Celine Trotteur Messenger Bag
The bag is named ‘Trotteur’ meaning a ‘Trotting Horse’, perhaps due to its saddle-bag shape. It’s quite an ordinary looking bag except for the exotic python skin.
Valentino Vitello Finger Clutch

We’ve seen the ‘hand’bag and ‘wrist’let. Now, please meet the ‘finger’ clutch by Valentino. Though an innovative concept, it’s low on practicality. Valentino’s bags this season have the gryphon and scarab abundantly used on them.
So, would you test new waters or stick to the classics this summer?
