Ever since I got active on Instagram, the number of posts on the blog is dwindling and though I do not quite like it, owing to the constricted bandwidth I have, that was the only option. But once in a while I come across brands that are so promising, that I cannot miss to add their story on these pages for posterity.
Leather as a material requires an expert skill to handle it right. So when I came across a brand name as beautiful as The January Leathers, my curiosity was piqued, and I was keen to know who was the driving force. Moreover, the name itself instantly evoked the same feeling as of having a hot cuppa on a cold winter morning.
I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this venture is the brainchild of a woman entrepreneur, Swati Chandrasekhar, who is a Leather Technologist from Anna University, Chennai. Now, I didn’t know that there was such a branch of engineering itself! But Swati has all the qualified know-how in the entire cycle – from treating and processing raw hide to manufacturing leather goods. With The January Leathers, she aims to bring best-of-breed leather at affordable prices to the Indian consumer. All their leathers are processed in sustainable tanneries that conform to the international REACH standards of testing.
When asked about how the brand name came about, she answers passionately, “I wanted a name that everyone understands and easily remembers. Also, January is a month of all new beginnings!” I so agree and it’s a beautiful name that one is not going to forget in a hurry!
Swati has integrated technology with functionality, not just with manufacturing, in the true sense – the bags are the first in India to have LEDs inside them! This is such a handy feature – no more rummaging around for those ever-elusive items!
I’m just so excited to have another homegrown leather goods manufacturer with so full of potential, amongst us! Bring those gorgeous bags on!
