Trend Report: Suitcase Bags Claim Their Spot Under The Limelight

Box Bags, Desi Drama Queen, Spades. Piccadilly, ANQI, Gayatri Chopra Bags

Each fashion season comes with its own set of ‘It’ bags. While some of them are instantly catapulted to cult status, a few others take their time to get there, slowly but certainly. Similar is the tale of the box bag or the briefcase bag or the suitcase bag that is not a stranger to the runway but has emerged in many delectable interpretations in the past few seasons.

On the face of it, these are miniature trunks or briefcases. They carry on the wildly popular trend of mini and micro bags. While rigidly structured bags such as these score low on practicality, their cutesy charm cannot be ignored! Internationally, the most noteworthy box bags are perhaps the Louis Vuitton Petite Malle and the royally embellished Dolce & Gabbana ones.

Closer home, the Indian fashion scene is replete with remarkable instances of this geometric bag. Here we explore:

1. Gayatri Chopra Bags: We have long been ardent admirers of Gayatri Chopra bags but her recent launch simply took our breath away! The ethnic twist she has given the bags with the motifs and patterns, mellow down the rigid structure to a great extent, bringing out its true beauty. You’ll be hard-pressed if you need to choose just one out of the collection that is spectacular in its entirety. These bags are predominantly clutches for special-occasion. Follow them here.

2. ANQI: One of our earliest encounters of the briefcase bag was with ANQI. These can be your everyday or even party-wear bags because that’s how wide their range is. What we find particularly attractive is that the brand is open to experimenting across a wide spectrum of colors, patterns and textures. With the result that there is always an element of surprise in their bags. The prices are reasonable and usually sub-INR 2,000. Follow them here.

3. Piccadilly: This is our newest discovery and, with its fashionable twist on the box bags, is one of our favorites. They are no longer just clutches as they come in color-blocked, cross-bodied avatars, endearing one and all to the bag’s basic design and structure. Oh, we must give a special mention of their uber cool monsoon bags! In addition, these are really affordable bags. Check out their website.

4. Desi Drama Queen: When there’s a mention of a ‘queen’, can elegance be far behind? No, it follows in tandem. Their bags are a beautiful intermix of colors, patterns and soft tassels juxtaposed against each other for stunning effect. The best part is their bags go well with both ethnic as well as contemporary outfits, as they inculcate contrasting design elements. And thankfully, the price tags are pleasing to the common man! Find their collection on their website, though they also e-retail through channels such as Jabong.com and Koovs.com.

You’ll know exactly what I mean, when you glance at the images below. And they are also into footwear. Follow them here.

6. Happily Unmarried: For a firm that started in 2003 with the intent of providing essential services to the unmarried, Happily Unmarried has diversified by leaps and bounds. They warrant a detailed, dedicated post to them, but for now, let’s say, they have some of the quirkiest yet functional products up their sleeve. And the product we showcase with respect to the box bags, is this incredibly charming business card holder. Whether you have any business cards to hold or not, just grab this adorable thing; you can find umpteen purposes for it later! This miniature wonder costs all of INR 600! Find this and loads of other fun stuff on their website.
